Basis comprises a number of middleware programs and tools from SAP. Basis is responsible for the smooth operation of the SAP Basis system and thus for R/3 and SAP ERP, for example. SAP thus provides the underlying basis (hence the name) that enables various SAP applications to be interoperable and portable across operating systems and databases.
After your user has the necessary permissions for the SQL Editor, perform the following steps: Call the DBACOCKPIT transaction. The application layer is the core of an R/3 SAP Basis system. This layer communicates in both directions, to the presentation layer and to the database layer. The application programs on the application servers request the required data from the database layer, process it, prepare it for the user and pass it on to the presentation layer. Data that the user enters in the SAP GUI is passed on to the database via the application servers.
The second component of the application layer is the message server. It acts as a kind of "mediator" between the services and the applications.
Some missing SAP basic functions in the standard are supplied by the PC application "Shortcut for SAP Systems".
