A move is imminent
Following the recommendation of dividing the SAP basis into an application-orientated and infrastructure-related SAP basis [A4], Figure 3 shows a possible presentation form. The SAP-Basis interface function is structured into a SAP basis, which is close to the application and is responsible for coordination and communication with vertical and higher IT specialist and business areas, and a SAP basis close to the infrastructure. The infrastructure-related SAP basis in turn serves as the link between the application-orientated SAP basis and the infrastructure levels. Subject Matter Experts will perform the link task again. In the application-orientated SAP basis, in turn, technology architects are more likely to be placed. The innovation activity or innovation team aspect of the SAP basis is placed at the level of the SAP basis, which is close to the application, because the existing capabilities allow it to assume a leading, also coordinating role and acquire expertise both by adding the SAP basis near the infrastructure and the downstream IT departments. If you look at everything I've described up front in its entirety, it quickly becomes clear which direction things are headed: the SAP basis will increasingly move toward an SRE-centric environment over the next decade. This is what the future of SAP looks like, and I look forward to an exciting journey.

As we explained in SAP Basis, your SAP Basis administrator (or team) is directly responsible for keeping your SAP landscape healthy, online, and up-to-date. This includes:
Through a sound expertise in the SAP technology environment, it is recommended to bring the know-how of the SAP basis into the IT strategy and IT roadmap. For this, the responsibility lies primarily with the CIO as the carrier and responsible of the IT strategy and the IT organisation. Likewise, the SAP basis should serve as a sparring partner for individuals and boards (such as enterprise architects) that significantly influence the strategy.

As the complexity of the systems and the interdependencies tend to increase, the challenges are great and the requirements are growing.
